Poli
It’s been a long time since I wrote a recipe. As Shriya said we had a good time in her place and was busy hanging out.
My husband and Shriya are fond of poli. We were so busy that we were not able make poli at Shriya’s house. Today I tried poli, my mom’s recipe and it came out well. I have shared the recipe with you all.
Poli is a sweet bread made out of All purpose flour, jaggery, coconut and channa dal. Its usually made during Festival Times.
Ingredients:
- Maida (All purpose flour) – 2 cups
- Shredded coconut – 1 1/2 cups
- Channa dal – 1/2 cup
- Jaggery – 3/4 th of grated coconut (adjust to taste)
- Food color (yellow) – a pinch
- Salt – a pinch
- Cardamom – 4
- Oil – 6 to 7 tbsp
Method of preparation:
Preparation of dough:
- Take maida in a bowl, add salt, yellow powder and combine well
- knead the flour by adding water and make a soft dough. Keep it aside for 2 1/2 hrs
Preparation of puran:
- Soak channa dal in water for an hour.
- Drain the water and add the dal to boiling water and let it cook.
- Dal should be soft to touch. It should not be overcooked.
- Now drain the water and let it dry for sometime.
- Boil 1/4 cup of water and add jaggery to it and allow it to melt completely.
- Now filter the liquid to get rid off dirts.
- Again heat the liquid at medium heat for 10-15 minutes.
- It should become a thick but free flowing liquid.
- In between, grind the channa dal into a coarse powder.
- Now add the grated coconut to the jaggery and mix well followed by channa dal and ground cardamom.
- Combine them to form a solid which is puran.
Preparation of poli:
- Take a small ball from the dough and roll it into a small thick chapathi on an oil spread thick plastic sheet.
- If you use your hand wet your palms with oil and spread the dough.
- Now place a small ball of the puran on the center and fold all the sides (see pic).
- Again spread it into a small chapathi.
- Heat griddle and fry the poli by turning both the sides. You can add oil if necessary.
๐ Serve hot or at room temperature

Have tried but really tough to spread out the maida covering, right?it stretches in rather than towards out! ๐
we use either dal or coconut with jaggery for the filling..the mix of two would be great!

As u said it was tough to spread out the maida initially. But I tried spreading out by wetting my plams constantly with oil. It was then a bit easier. And mixture of coconut and dal was my mom’s idea and it was really delicious.

Oh wow! My mouth can’t stop watering. It’s been many months since I had Puran Poli. I can never forget the taste. We don’t use coconut and cardamom though, but this recipe sounds amazing and I must try out these things. Can’t wait!
