Kadappa Sambhar

Ingredients:

  • Split daliya(Pottu kadalai) :3 tbsp
  • Onion : 1(medium)(sliced lenghtwise)
  • Tomato : 2(small)
  • Green chili : 4
  • Coconut : 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds : 2tsp
  • Asafoetida : a pinch
  • Curry leaves : 8 springs
  • salt to taste
  • Garlic : 3
  • Ginger : 1 inch(chopped)
  • oil : 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds : 1 tsp
  • Urad dal :1 tsp
  • Fennel seeds : 1 tsp
  • Water : 1 cup
  • coriander leaves : few(for garnishing)

Method of Preparation:

  1. Fry half of the sliced onions  with garlic (2) ,cumin seeds ,green chili(2),ginger(1/2 inch)and coconut (chopped) in a oil.Fry it for few minutes or till the onions turn in to Golden color .
  2. Now add split daliya (3 tbsp) to the above mixture and remove from heat.Let it cool for few minutes.
  3. And grind  the above mixture .Grind it coarsely (You don’t want a fine paste).
  4. Keep this mixture aside.
  5. Now heat an oil in a  pan add mustard ,urad dal,fennel seeds,asafoetida  when it splutters add curry leaves and the remaining green chilies ,garlic and ginger in to it.fry for few minutes.
  6. Now add the remaining onions ,and fry until it become golden brown and add tomatoes fry for 4 minutes .
  7. Add salt in to  it and add the grind mixture into it and add a cup of water .
  8. Boil it for 4 minutes and remove it from heat.
  9. Don’t boil it too much because it will become thick.
  10. Garnish it with Coriander leaves and fried curry leaves(optional).

This sambhar goes well with idli and especially dosa.
