Mangalore Adai (Sweet Lentil Crepes)

I came across this recipe in a South Indian TV channel food show. I used to make kara adai, paruppu adai and thavala adai. But this sounded like a different recipe so I ended up trying it. It’s absolutely worth a try. Everyone in my family loved this recipe. It came out really tasty.

Adai (Rice pancake) is a popular south Indian breakfast dish and can also be had for dinner. It is made with variety of lentils and rice. It’s actually rich in protein and good for health.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes
No of servings :4-5

Ingredients:

  • Toor dal : 1 cup
  • Channa Dal : 1 cup
  • Raw rice : 1 cup
  • Shredded coconut : 1 cup
  • Jaggery : 500 gms (crushed )
  • Cardamom Powder : 1 tsp
  • Ghee: as needed

Method Of Preparation:

  1. Soak toor dal, chana dal, and raw rice each separately for about 4-5 hours.
  2. Grind the raw rice separately into smooth paste.
  3. Grind both the dals and crushed jaggery into a coarse paste. The consistency should be like a thick paste. Don’t add excess water.
  4. In a wide bowl mix the ground raw rice paste and dal, jaggery mixture.
  5. Mix it all together and add shredded coconut and cardamom powder. Keep this mixture aside.
  6. Heat wide flat pan or tawa. Sprinkle some ghee on the tawa.
  7. Pour the dough in to the wide pan (tawa).
  8. Make it a round shape just like pancake.
  9. Pour some ghee or oil in the center and the sides.
