Tuscan Herb Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar

Posted by on Dec 21, 2012 in Italian, Misc | Comments Off on Tuscan Herb Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar

Oil and Vinegar dip, the most simple yet flavorful combination for dipping bread or crackers. I recently went to Arkansas to meet my friend Arthi (One of ST’s author) and she took me to a beautiful place called Eureka Springs. There we went to the popular Thorncrown Church, a beautiful and peaceful place. On the way to Christ of the Ozarks, we stopped somewhere where I found this wonderful place called Fresh Harvest with a wide selection of Olive Oil and aged Balsamic Vinegar. I have always wanted to buy a good bottle of Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar for dipping bread. And my dream came true. My friends and I were so excited to taste all kinds of oil and vinegar. I couldn’t believe Balsamic Vinegar would taste so good by itself. I fell in love and bought myself a...

Posted by on Dec 7, 2012 in Breakfast Menu, Healthy Eats, How to??, Slideshow | 2 comments

Homemade Granola is a mixture of rolled oats, nuts and dry fruits with oil, maple syrup and sugar. It makes a healthy breakfast or a snack or a topping in your ice cream or Greek yogurt. This is a basic granola recipe and it is very easy to make. Make your own cereals with your favorite mixture and mix it with cold or warm milk or munch as a snack. I have added all my favorite ingredients in my Granola. You can also include seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower seeds and other dry fruits such as dates, prunes and berries. If you start making your own cereals or granola bars you will never go back to the store bought ones. Believe me and give it a try!!! Ingredients: Rolled oats – 2 cups Slivered or sliced almonds – 3/4...

How to Extract Milk From a Coconut

Posted by on Aug 2, 2012 in How to?? | 1 comment

Coconut milk is extracted from grated meat of coconut. It is a common ingredient in many tropical cuisines. There are two grades of coconut milk, thick and thin. Thicker milk is used in making desserts and rich sauces while thinner milk is used in gravies, curries, soups, etc. South Indian cooking involves a lot of coconut milk, especially Kerala cuisine. Coconut milk is extracted by grinding coconut meat with warm water and pressing it. I always feel that fresh coconut milk is lighter than the canned ones. But I know it’s a little time consuming but totally worth it. Due to its high calorie level (specially fat calorie level) it is used occasionally. But it is said to have good cholesterol which helps in raising the levels of HDL.  So enjoy this homemade coconut milk in your cooking. You will need:...

How to make Ghee or Clarified Butter?

Posted by on Dec 13, 2011 in How to??, Veggie Entrees & Sides | 3 comments

Ghee is clarifies butter and is commonly used in South Asian countries such as India. It all begins by boiling cow’s milk and removing and collecting the thick layer formed on top of the milk. The thick cream is refrigerated and churned using a wooden whisker or an electric whisker until sticky and creamy butter is formed on top and the rest becomes a thick and creamy buttermilk. Straining it gives you the butter. This butter is refrigerated and ghee is prepared out of it. You can also buy unsalted butter from store and prepare ghee.  Ghee is used in the preparation of gravies, curries, pulao/ghee rice. Also used for seasoning and spreading on rotis. I hope the step by step instruction will help you to prepare ghee at home which is tasty and economical. Ingredients: Butter – 2...
