Suzhiyan is a traditional dish which we make during Diwali. It is a very simple dish in which sweet puran in is either dipped in maida or urad dal batter and deep fried. In Tamil Nadu, we generally make with Maida flour. Here is the recipe for this simple dish.

Ingredients:

  • Channa Dal – 1 cup
  • Jaggery – 1 1/4 cup
  • Coconut (grated) – 1/2 cup
  • Cardamom powder – a pinch

For Outer Cover:

  • Maida / All purpose flour – 1/4 cup

  1. Soak the channa dal for 1 hour and grind it coarsely.
  2. Dry roast the grated coconut and keep it aside.
  3. Boil around 1/4 cup of water and add the crushed jaggery.
  4. When the jaggery melts completely, add the ground channa dal.
  5. When the water evaporates completely, add the roasted coconut and cardamom powder.

    • I have never tried Suzhiyan with sugar. But I think you can try with sugar but adjust the sugar quantity according to taste (make sugar syrup and then add the channa dal).
