Moong Dhal Kheer

kheer Pongal is an auspicious day for Tamilians. It is in celebration of the prosperity and good fortune that comes with the harvest and in thanks to the rain and sun for a good season.

It is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month ‘Thai’ and today is that day! It is customary to make sweets on Pongal day and I made some Moong Dal Kheer, also called payasam to celebrate this day.

Preparation Time: 45 minutes
No of servings: 4-5

Spice Level: 0 out of 5

Ingredients:

  • Moong dhal : 1 cup
  • Bengal gram : 2 1/2 tsp
  • Ghee : 1 tbsp
  • cashew nuts : 8
  • Raisins: few(optional)
  • Jaggery : 1/2 cup
  • Water : 1 1/2 cup
  • Milk : 1 cup

Method Of Preparation :

  1. wash the moong dhal and bengal gram and soak them in water for 10 minutes .
  2. Drain the water from the dhals and some water pressure cook them for upto 3 whistles or exactly 15 minutes.
  3. Now boil the jaagery in a cup of water and make a syrup.
  4. Add the jaggery syrup in to the moongdhal mixture and boil for 3 minutes.
  5. Heat a pan add ghee , put some cashews and raisins fry them and keep it aside.
  6. Add a cup of milk in to the the above boiling moongdhal & jaggery mixture and let it boil for another 3 minutes.
  7. Finally add the fried cashews into the boiling kheer and remove from heat.

Serve it hot or chill .
