Cabbage Kootu

This is a typical vegetarian side dish that is a part of a traditional south Indian meal. Because of cabbage’s suttle flavor it best compliments spicy gravies like vatha kuzhambhu, Milagootal.

Ingredients:

  • Cabbage : 2 cups(finely chopped)
  • Channa dal : 1/2 cup
  • Onion : 1/2(finely chopped)
  • Tomato : 1
  • Green chilies : 3(according to your spice level)
  • Curry leaves : 4 to 5
  • Oil : 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder : 1/4 tsp
  • Fennel seeds : 1tsp
  • Mustard seeds : 1 tsp
  • Urad dal : 1 tsp
  • Asafoaetida : a pinch
  • Ghee : 1 tbsp
  • Coconut : 3tbsp(shredded)(optional)
  • Ginger : 1/2 tbsp(finely chopped)
  • Salt : according to your taste

Method of Preparation:

  1. Soak the channa dal for 15 minutes .Because when you soak the dal it’s easy to pressure cook.
  2. After that pressure cook the channa dal with onions ,chopped tomatoes, green chilies, ginger, turmeric powder , salt and a cup of water in to it.Add a 2 tsp of oil on top of it and close the lid .
  3. Pressure cook the dal for 3 whistle , remove from heat and keep it aside.
  4. Now Pressure cook the cabbage for two whistle .And drain the cabbage and mix it with the above dal mixture.
  5. Boil the whole mixture for about 5 to 6 minutes .Make sure that the dal is mashed well.
  6. Heat ghee in a pan add mustard seeds , urad dal, fennel seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida after the seeds splutter put it in the above mixture .
  7. Add the shredded coconut into mixture and remove from heat.

Serve hot with rice , chapathi. 🙂
