Poondu Chutney / Garlic Chutney

My mom used to make this garlic chutney often. Garlic chutney is made with just garlic and tomatoes. There is no addition of onions. It is very simple to make and if you have peeled garlic, this chutney will be ready in 5 minutes :).

Ingredients:

  • Garlic cloves – 1 cup (peeled)
  • Tomatoes – 1 cup (chopped)
  • Red chillies – 4 to 5 (according to spice level)
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 1 tsp

For Seasoning:

  • Oil – 1/2 tsp (preferably sesame oil)
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – a few
  • Split urad dal – 1/2 tsp

Method of Preparation:

  1. Heat oil in a pan and fry red chillies followed by garlic.
  2. When the garlic cloves become soft add the chopped tomatoes and salt.
  3. Let it cool and and grind it to paste.
  4. Even if there is chunks of garlic it will be good.
  5. Season it with mustard seeds, curry leaves and split urad dal.
  6. Serve with hot Idlies or Dosas
