Instant Rava Idli Upma

Idli Upma is made from left over idlis. Rava Idli Upma is similar to Idli Upma except that we use rava idlis. I made this dish from the leftover idlis made from instant rava idli mix. It was very delicious and has become my favorite go to upma recipe. You can serve this with chutney or  pickle.

Ingredients: 

  • Left over Rava Idlis – 5
  • Chopped onion – 1 cup
  • Green chilies – 2
  • Carrot – 1
  • Green peas – 1/4 cup
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Chana dal – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • A few curry leaves
  • Mint or coriander leaves for garnishing

Method of Preparation:

Follow the instructions from the package and make idlis. Or combine the instant mix with butter milk until a thick batter is formed. Leave it for 5 to 10 mins and make idlis. For a detailed procedure check here.

Heat oil in a cast iron pan or any pan and add mustard seeds. When it splutters, add chana dal and urad dal. When lentils become golden brown add chopped green chilies and curry leaves. Saute for a minute.

Add onions and saute till it becomes translucent. Cook chopped carrots and green peas in boiling water or microwave till it is 3/4th cooked. Add this to the sauteed onions along with turmeric powder and allow it to cook for 5 minutes.

Finally add crumbled idlis and mix everything well. After a minute, remove from heat and garnish with chopped cilantro or mint. Serve hot with chutney or pickle.
